What to Wear for Your Engagement Session | Virginia Wedding Photographer

Virginia Wedding Photographer | Engagement photos | Engagement Session | Blue Ridge Mountains

It’s a question I get as a Virginia wedding photographer quite often… “what should I wear for my engagement photos”? Well, I’m finally here to say there’s no right or wrong answer coming from me! To help though, I’ve searched through some previous galleries to give you the best examples of some of my favorite sessions and how they dressed! Whether we’re taking pictures with a gorgeous view of the Blue Ridge Mountains or splashing in front of a North Carolina waterfall, here are some recommendations to help those planning brides!

A FLOWING DRESS

Josh & Katelynd, their engagement photos are some I’ll never forget and will never get tired of sharing! We started their engagement session at sunrise in the Blue Ridge Mountains with this stunning flowing dress accompanied by Josh’s simple suspenders. The wind on this plateau is WHIPPING but that didn’t stop us from running all over as fast as we could to capture the glory this engagement dress provided. If you know this Virginia wedding photographer, then you know the weather is my favorite detail on for any session or event and for Josh & Katelynd, the weather definitely kept us on our toes. From roaring wind to way below freezing temperatures, these two slayed their engagement session in the Blue Ridge Mountains!

AN ACCESSORY

Alex & Breanna… another couple that I can’t get enough of! These two have been in front of my camera since their proposal and I cannot wait for their wedding 10.10.2020! Fun fact, we did took their engagement photos in the Blue Ridge Mountains at sunrise as well! Something about that gorgeous glow captivates this Virginia wedding photographer’s heart! They kept things simple though! Instead of bringing multiple outfits for their engagement photos, they wore the same one but Breanna brought a jacket to switch things up! And let me tell you, what a great accessory to provide a new look! Throughout their entire engagement session, we popped that jacket on and off, constantly giving us a fresh new perspective of that key hole in the back of Breanna’s dress! Who could focus on that though when those Blue Ridge Mountains were lighting up behind them! Other accessories I would recommend are hats, scarves, blankets, etc.

A COMFY AND CASUAL

A comfy and casual outfit is always one of my go to suggestions for a couple but DEFINITELY something I envisioned John and Shannon in for their engagement session! They had the idea of taking their engagement photos at John’s family property with a rushing creek and and an unforgettable view of the Appalachian Mountains near Tennessee. But comfy, cute & casual is how I’ve always remembered Shannon and I have to say this to everyone, don’t be afraid to wear jeans for your engagement session! Having known each other pretty dang well from high school, I knew her engagement photos were going to be full of natural moments. I mean look at them! Her makeup is natural, their connection is natural, this location is nothing but natural and I’m so happy they chose me to be their Virginia wedding photographer!

A MIX OF DRESSY AND COMFORTABLE

There’s nothing quite like a glowing sunset, but a glowing sunset for this sweet engagement session was in the best location ever with the best outfit combination! When Megan and Cody showed up for their engagement photos at Beaver Dam Farms, I didn’t know what to expect. Even though I’m a Virginia wedding photographer and grew up minutes from this colorful nook in the Blue Ridge Mountains, I had never photographed in the sunflower fields before. These two showed up though with the most adorable mix of dressy and comfortable outfits that had me thinking it could honestly pass off as an elopement! And can we please give Megan a round of applause on that dress and Cody for his flawless man bun…. like, try to stop staring at them, I dare you!

AN OUTFIT YOU CAN GET WET

Last but not least, Nick & Cara’s couple’s session that could pass as an engagement session and was taken weeks before they got engaged! When Cara reached out about their couple’s session, she was up front about the fact that she wanted a gorgeous view of the Blue Ridge Mountains and most likely some water. With us both being Virginia wedding photographers, we both had a vision and I can honestly say, they wore the right outfits! Cara wore a slimming black shirt with a suede skirt while Nick wore a classic button down and some jeans…. until it came time to get in Smith Mountain Lake! Cara, being the amazing and prepared soul she is, chose this outfit not only because she looked good in it OUT of the water but because she looked good in it IN the water! Nick on the other hand chose to switch out his jeans for a more feasible option and brought a swimsuit while still sporting his button up. Most any outfit can get wet, so there’s really no right outfit for this but more so along the fact of, if you’re wearing the right mindset. You can something slimming or you can wear a flowing dress,, either look great and I have pictures to prove it. Although they aren’t technically their engagement photos, they sure as heck made this list because they definitely wore the right outfits to create some pretty incredible images!
